This is a call: To come together on November 9th, at 9 am, in the court of Nancy, or in front of any other court of France, or elsewhere, and a call to any other form of decentralized direct action. Let us be present and active to support our comrades, our struggles and let us be determined to show our refusal to submit!
On Monday, November 9th at 9am, in the Court of Nancy, France, three people suspected to be hacktivists of the Anonymous movement will be judged for minor computer attacks against institutional sites. During December 2014, and January 2015, the Ministry of Defense (in response to the death of Rémi Fraisse in Sivens), the General Council of the Meuse, the Lorraine Regional Council, and the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (ANDRA) were all targeted. The latter three sites were targeted under the umbrella of “Anonymous Actions Against the Useless and Imposed Mega Projects” (OPGPII), to oppose the “Burial of Nuclear Waste” policy in Bure especially.
The three face charges for committing the offenses of “Fraudulent Access and Maintenance” in a computer system, and “In a Organized Gang”. Ercun, Boby and seamymsg are facing up to ten years in prison and/or a fine of €150,000.
The upcoming trial is another blatent demonstration of the heavy-weight security agenda the state has followed when combating cyber-crime and terrorism. This is also a further step towards the rampant repression of protest movements with rational and radical actions, and hunts those who oppose the destruction of natural pasture and farm land by autonomous means.
In addition to this blatent crackdown, this case raises another question. These alleged acts may indeed be illegal but we do not consider this response as reasonable in view of the circumstances.
Whether at Bure, in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, around the high-speed railway link between Lyon and Turin, around the dam Sivens, or any other imposed mega projects; individuals and collectives oppose the authoritarian and capitalist developments, by any means they consider most appropriate.
The three to be prosecuted on Nov 9th have been spectacularly arrested amidst significant police pressure so this is indeed a political trial. There is a high risk of “Examplary Sanctions” being particularly severe in order to discourage those, who think that direct action and sabotage* are part of the means of legitimate defense against a deadly system.
*For Voltairine de Cleyre, “Every person who ever thought he had a right to assert, and went boldly and asserted it, himself, or jointly with others that shared his convictions, practiced direct action.”
